It's a bit tricky because referral system was created for using with standalone version, so some players make a mistake of creating a new web-account instead of logging into their one. Once theyre on your friends list you should see them there. At the top of the screen to the left of the battle button, theres a 'create a division' drop down. Click that and add them to your friends list.
